September 11th

I knew this date was approaching, but when I heard it on the radio this morning it took me by surprise. September 11th. Can you believe it has been 8 years since that day in 2001? It seems like just yesterday those planes crashed. I can still clearly remember it, and I think I always will.

It was my freshman year of college. I had been at Purdue just over a month and was still getting into the swing of my schedule. I had an early class that morning and when I got back to the room my roommate's boyfriend was there...no roomie in sight. Already, this was not an uncommon scene. Luckily, he happened to be in my major so we had a lot of classes together and by then I had grown to know him fairly well. He was the one who told me what had happened. We watched the rest unfold on TV until my roommate came back. Strangely, she had heard from my mom who had called the room when I was gone to tell me. We basically stayed there for what seemed like hours until classes interrupted our vigil.

I had no idea then the impact that day would have on our country. I can't even imagine what it must've been like to be there or even know people who were in the city on that day. I have watched a lot of specials done where the whole thing is shot by New Yorkers with their personal video cameras, capturing the smoking World Trade Center and the actual falling of the towers...but that doesn't compare at all to being in the midst of all of that ciaos. My heart just breaks thinking about the people that we lost that day.

Matt and I had the privileged of going to New York about a year and a half ago. Our hotel overlooked Ground Zero. Being my first trip, it was hard to imagine what it looked like before that day. Here's what we were able to capture from our window:

Such an empty space. But also, a space for rebuilding.

Today I want to honor those who lost their lives that day and the families they left behind. You will never, ever be forgotten.

What is your story?

I was in high school sitting in my yearbook class when we saw this on the news. I remember feeling just stunned. It's hard to believe it was 8 years ago...

I was a sophomore at WVU and my roommate woke me up. I ran to the living room to see what happened and there live in front of my eyes on TV the second plane hit. I couldn't believe it. My dad was supposed to be in the city that day. I couldn't get a hold of him for what seemed like hours. Finally he called. His meeting got canceled. He never went. I remember my roommates and I just wanted to go home to our families. And my roommates mom said no, you guys are safe in WV. And then the plane went down in PA about 30 miles from where we were. I still can't believe this all happened.

I was a sophomore in college at U of M. I woke up to go to an early class...when I went downstairs, one of my roommates was glued to the TV. I couldn't believe what was happening...and I don't think I really grasped the enormity of it all quite yet. I ran back upstairs to wake up another roommate, who was from upstate NY. Eventually, I had to go to my class...and as soon as I got there, we found out that classes had been cancelled. Everyone was in a panic, walking around campus in a daze...trying to call their families but all the cell phones were out. I cannot believe it was already 8 years ago...wow.

It seems like so long ago...but I will always remember the events of that day. It really hit home for me, being from NY and living so close to the city. Not to mention I was in college in D.C. at the time.

It does seem like so long ago, but I will always remember where I was, what I was feeling and what I was doing.

I'm always been really affected when this day comes around every year. I didn't know a single person directly affected, so I can't even imagine what the friends and family members of 9/11 victims go through each and every day.

I was in the tenth grade in high school in chapel. We were just being dismissed when the president of our school came to announce it. None of us really knew what he was talking about until later in the morning/lunch when teachers started turning on the TVs in our classrooms. My parents were flying to Russia that day. They actually flew out of one of the airports that one of the planes left from. My best friend and roommate (I went to a private Christian school) was from the states and lived about 5 hours from NYC. Her dad was a private detective and was sent there to work. I'm not American yet I still always have a heavy heart on sept 11th ...

We're the same age. I too was Freshman in College at USC on 9/11/01 - I had only been there 3 weeks at the time. I remember waking up to a bunch of commotion in dorm hall and opening my door to ask what was happening. The girl across the hall from me said "quick turn on your TV! They attacked the world trade center and the pentagon!" That day was such a haze... going to class, watching coverage in class and between classes, and I even had one professor say he was going to follow his lesson plan for that day because "terrorists win when they control how we spend our lives."
